This photo by Stuart Black shows slightly scary wooden nutcracker dolls sold in a Berlin Christmas market. The dolls have long been associated with the festive season in Germany, but only became internationally famous when Tchaikovsky adapted an 1816 E.T.A Hoffman story into the ballet we now know as The Nutcracker.
