The Romería (pilgrimage) de Rocío is Spain’s largest and most spectacular pilgrimage. Thousands of pilgrims walk through the countryside to the village of El Rocío in Almonte, Andalusia, during Pentecost. There they pay tribute to the Virgin of El Rocío, whose effigy is carried around the town as crowds of passionate followers fight for the privilege of carrying it.
During Pentecost some pilgrims do a three day journey on horseback through Doñana National Park to El Rocío, Huelva province, Andalusia (age fotostock/Robert Harding)
