Every year on US Flag Day (14th June) veterans and scout troops hold ceremonies to ‘retire’ old and worn flags by burning them. The rules dictate that they cannot just be thrown on the fire, however, but must by cut in a respectful and precise way, and the ritual should be accompanied by patriotic songs and stories.
