This weekend Venice celebrated the Festival of the Redeemer, lighting up the city’s famous skyline with fireworks. The festival has its roots in the 16th Century when the Senate built the beautiful Il Redentore Church to thank Jesus for ridding the city of a terrible plague that claimed around 50,000 lives.
