Cinco de Mayo (the Fifth of May) is a celebration that marks the Mexican army’s victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during the Franco-Mexican war. Over the past decades the event has gained popularity across the US as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
