Every 24 May the French seaside town of Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer becomes the site of celebration and religious fervour during the Pilgrimage of the Gitans. Gypsies from mostly French and Catalan communities gather to celebrate Black Sara, their Patron Saint, who was said to have accompanied St Marie-Jacobé and St Marie-Salomé when they arrived here from Palestine.
