This series of unusual carnivals is held in different locations in the Valle del Gran San Bernardo in the Italian Alps in January and February. Revellers wear traditional costumes with sequins, beads and wooden masks – said to hail from the passage of Napoleon’s soldiers here in May 1800 – and carry the hair of a horse’s tail in their hands to help banish evil spirits.
