Wildlife photographer Kevin Morgans took these wonderful images of red squirrels in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, and in the Yorkshire Dales in England. There are now only a few refuges left in the UK for these treasured animals, as the larger grey squirrels, a species first introduced by the Victorians, are driving them to extinction.

Grey squirrel populations continue to grow throughout the north of England and Scotland, out-competing the reds and spreading the squirrelpox virus, which kills only the red squirrels. Without intervention, it is thought that the species could be extinct within 35 years.
