Every year in late May or early June the sleepy village of El Rocío comes to life as almost a million people join the Romería (pilgrimage) del Rocío, Spain’s largest and most spectacular pilgrimage. Pilgrims walk or ride horses through the countryside of Doñana National Park to the village during Pentecost to pay tribute to the Virgin of El Rocío, whose effigy is carried around the town. Crowds of passionate followers fight for the privilege of carrying it.
