In this frenzied horse race in the medieval Tuscan town of Sienna, bribery and corruption abound. Riders are encouraged to sabotage fellow competitors’ efforts, from tugging their reins and hitting them in the face to paying others off to influence the outcome. Not surprisingly, the winning horse often crosses the finish line riderless.
