Every Thanksgiving, US chain store Macy’s puts on a parade through the centre of Manhattan with giant balloons depicting popular characters that have included Spiderman, Ronald McDonald and Pikachu. The event started in the 1920s when the store’s workers, many of whom were recent immigrants, wanted to celebrate the American festival of Thanksgiving with a street parade that was similar to the ones they had known and loved in Europe.
