This weekend saw the focus of a spectacular tradition in the Australian town of Alice Springs – camel racing. Initiated as a bet between two friends, the first official Alice Springs camel race took place in 1970 in the dry Todd River bed.

The race proved so popular that plans were made to hold the event every year and the contest now includes children’s races, an ironman challenge and a Mr and Mrs Camel Cup competition.
