There is evidence, Mike says, that customers are turning away from the industry giants and moving towards the specialist, tightly curated niche collections.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/preview\/1186-30\/traditional-fisherman-inle-lake-shan-state-myanmar-burma\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.robertharding.com\/preview\/RM\/RH\/HORIZONTAL\/1186-30.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Traditional fisherman on Inle lake, Shan State, Myanmar (Burma), Asia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davewallphoto.co.uk\">Dave Wall<\/a> was also extolling the virtues of stock in his talk on the subject, calling it \u2018the gift that keeps on giving\u2019. Dave shoots simple, atmospheric shots that mainly sell as book covers. Despite having an incredible range of Canon and Sony equipment, Dave shoots on a\u00a0small <a href=\"http:\/\/www.panasonic.com\/uk\/consumer\/cameras-camcorders\/lumix-digital-cameras---point-and-shoot.html\">Panasonic Lumix<\/a> because, he says, it\u2019s \u2018inconspicuous, easy to carry and the quality is more than good enough\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>His tips for stock success are to see which of your existing images sells best before spending money on your next shoot. He also encourages shooters to continue\u00a0\u2018feeding the beast\u2019 in order to keep your material at the top of the search pile, saying: \u201cThe more you put in, the more you get out.\u201d Like Mike, he thinks it\u2019s essential\u00a0to choose the right agency or your work risks getting lost in inappropriate or large, anonymous libraries.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/preview\/786-10238\/aerial-view-combine-harvester-wheat-field-dusk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.robertharding.com\/preview\/RF\/JU\/HORIZONTAL\/786-10238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"758\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drone footage of combine harvester In wheat field at dusk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Drones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The buzzing of drones could be heard in the background this year as shooters got excited over demos of the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/products\/phantom\"><em>DJI Phantom <\/em><\/a>model \u2013 an entry level, highly portable drone with a built-in-camera, which is the company\u2019s biggest retailer. DJI showcased footage captured by this and their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dji.com\/inspire-1\"><em>Inspire<\/em><\/a> drones that in the past could only have been created with helicopters.<\/p>\n<p>Since drones are classed as aircraft you\u2019ll need a commercial license to fly one, so as well as demonstrating the technology, company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerialmotionpictures.co.uk\/\">Aerial Motion Pictures<\/a> were outlining the basic training needed before applying for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caa.co.uk\/Commercial-industry\/Aircraft\/Unmanned-aircraft\/Apply-for-a-permission-to-fly-drones-for-commercial-work\/\">PfCO<\/a> (Permission for Commercial Operations) from the Civil Aviation Authority. They have seen many filmmakers as well as stills photographers attend their courses, costing around \u00a31000, and consisting of two days of theory, followed by a flight test.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/preview\/1174-2049\/small-group-curious-emperor-penguins-camera-tripod-ice\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.robertharding.com\/preview\/RF\/MI\/HORIZONTAL\/1174-2049.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A small group of curious Emperor penguins looking at camera and tripod on the ice on Snow Hill island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Cameras \u2013 Canon and Sony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canon\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canon.co.uk\/cameras\/eos-5d-mark-iv\/\">5D Mark IV<\/a> is proving a popular choice for all-round shooters with its improved low-light performance \u2013 with the 5DS\u2019s incredible sensor being a common choice among architectural and landscape photographers &#8211; but many pro camera buyers continue to look beyond industry giants Canon and Nikon to the mirrorless models now offered by makes such as Sony and Fuji.<\/p>\n<p>Sony was at the show demonstrating its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.co.uk\/electronics\/interchangeable-lens-cameras\/ilce-7-body-kit\">A7 mirrorless range<\/a>, a fast hybrid system that beats the 5Ds on price and weight, and offers many features such as \u2018Eye AF\u2019 (auto-focus that finds the subject\u2019s eye) and live sensor view. For those that fear having to re-invest in lenses, they explained that the Sigma lens adaptor means consumers&#8217;\u00a0existing AF glass will work well with these solid, well-made camera bodies. Photography giant\u00a0Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado presented the process behind his epic book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taschen.com\/pages\/en\/catalogue\/photography\/all\/05767\/facts.sebastio_salgado_genesis.htm?gclid=CLTL_a6_6tICFYU4GwodBjUD_g\">Genesis<\/a>, and iconic British publisher Dewey Lewis launched \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dougiewallace.com\/harrodsburg\/\">Harrodsburg<\/a>\u2019, his latest publication capturing the super-rich, by street photography legend Dougie Wallace, as featured recently on BBC\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/b08j8jj1\/what-do-artists-do-all-day-26-dougie-wallace\">What Do Artists Do All Day?<\/a>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Magnum\u2019s David Alan Harvey, who, as well as a photographer, also describes himself as a \u2018book artist\u2019 presented his life\u2019s work as a series of photo-books, from his first, \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.burnmagazine.org\/dialogue\/2012\/09\/off-for-a-family-drive-3\/\">Off for a Family Drive<\/a>\u2019 (made aged 14) to his latest, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidalanharvey.com\/haenyeo\/\">Haenyeo<\/a>\u2019, that documents 60 to 80-year-old female free-divers in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotos are worth nothing on your hard drive,\u201d said Harvey, who sees printing and book-making as central to his career. \u201cIf we come across old negatives we can do something with them, but in the future a hard drive will be useless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.photographyshow.com\/\">Read more about The Photography Show<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Photography Show in Birmingham, UK, offered fantastic opportunities to catch up on the latest equipment, techniques, industry trends and new publications.
