It\u2019s estimated that <strong>the Amazon\u2019s forests store between 90 and 140 billion tonnes of carbon<\/strong>. This rainforest habitat is one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Bigtime Biodiversity<br><\/b>Rainforests like the Amazon can have as much as 30 times more tree species per hectare than British forests. And a new species is discovered on average every three days.<b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/lightbox-galleries.php?id=23275&amp;gallery=Amazon\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/727-736.jpg\" alt=\"Black caiman {Caiman niger} basking with butterfly on nose  Manu NP, Peru, South America\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2.5km<sup>2<\/sup> area of forest can host up to 50,000 insect species. The Amazon river and its hundreds of tributaries are home to unique animals such as pink river dolphins (which are nearly blind) and caiman, crocodile-like animals that can eat deer.&nbsp; Over 3,000 different kinds of fish have adapted to different niches in the flooded forests. Some feed on the plankton in the flooded forests, while others have adapted to a diet of fruit and seeds. The carnivorous electric eel can deliver shocks of up to 650 volts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/lightbox-galleries.php?id=23275&amp;gallery=Amazon\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/796-307.jpg\" alt=\"Wild pink Amazon River dolphin, Amazon River, Brazil, South America\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disappearing Fast<br><\/strong>Every single minute of every day, a piece of rainforest the size of three football pitches is disappearing forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About a fifth of the Amazon rainforest has already been lost to deforestation but for the first time in decades, the rate of deforestation has slowed.&nbsp; This may be as a result of regular satellite images, now available publicly, showing illegal activity that otherwise went unnoticed.&nbsp; But this remarkable part of the world <strong>remains under threat <\/strong>from many resource-hungry industries&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/lightbox-galleries.php?id=23275&amp;gallery=Amazon\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1030-44573.jpg\" alt=\"Of rainforest at mining camp in amazon part of brazil, trucks and caterpillars in front of cleared rainforest and burning trees and logs ,rondonia, brazil\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rainforestrescue.sky.com\/our-campaign\/how-your-money-helps\/ranching-and-agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Industrial cattle ranching is<\/a> responsible for 80% of all forest cleared and most of the cattle is for the beef burger industry.&nbsp; Sadly an alternative protein and life-stock food, Soya, is another key cause of habitat loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of roads through untouched areas immediately makes the area accessible to logging and illegal occupation.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rainforestrescue.sky.com\/our-campaign\/how-your-money-helps\/roads-and-dams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydro-electric dams<\/a>, gold mines, and oil drilling are often sighted in protected areas.&nbsp; As a consequence of both legal and illegal industries in the rainforest infrastructure including power lines, canals and ports are constantly expanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/lightbox-galleries.php?id=23275&amp;gallery=Amazon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/817-198213.jpg\" alt=\"U50-841219\" class=\"wp-image-1341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/817-198213.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/817-198213-366x245.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all habitats, the Amazon is itself being affected by climate change. The problem may become more complicated when the level of habitat destruction, combined with climate change, results in a negative feedback loop that starts to accelerate the loss of the rainforest.
