His oceanic subjects have included magnificent giant turtles off the coast of Hawaii, majestic great whites in California, fluorescent glowing coral in Indonesia and shoals of Atlantic sailfish hunting off the Yucatan coast in Mexico, one photo of which won a prize at the prestigious World Press Photo contest in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=759-4269\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-225\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/759-4269.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><!--more--><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Reinhard Dirscherl<\/p>\n<p>Reinhard was introduced to scuba diving in 1989, after originally studying engineering. \u201cIn 1990 I travelled to Thailand to scuba dive. There I rented an underwater camera and shot my first underwater images,\u201d he recalls. He was disappointed with the result, which, by today\u2019s standards, he describes as \u2018horrible\u2019. But determined to improve, he bought an underwater camera and continued, diving in lakes across Germany and Austria.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=759-3225\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-223\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/759-3225.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Reinhard Dirscherl<\/p>\n<p>Since then Reinhard has photographed oceans, reefs and marine reserves across the world \u2013 from the Indian Ocean to the Galapagos Islands. As we speak he is about to fly to Dominica to shoot families of sperm whales. \u201cIn the past my favourite dive sites were tropical coral reefs,\u201d he says. \u201cBut now I prefer the bigger animals like whales and sharks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=759-4653\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-226\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/759-4653.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Reinhard Dirscherl<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he has ever felt afraid when confronting these beasts, he says no. He considers that the diver\u2019s own alertness \u2013 especially with regard to currents and water depth \u2013 is a far greater risk factor than the animals themselves. His most terrifying experience came not at the hands of sharks, but when a diving boat capsized a few years ago, leaving him to swim for nine hours to the coast of Papua New Guinea with a dislocated shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>However, even this harrowing experience did not deter him from his incredible passion and fascination for the underwater world. He estimates that he spends 150 days per year in the ocean, and sees it as his \u2018second home\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=759-3466\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-224\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/759-3466.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Reinhard Dirscherl<\/p>\n<p>Asked how he gets such great images, Reinhard replies: \u201cEvery nature photographer has to understand the behaviour of the animals. Otherwise he can\u00b4t shoot images of them. The animals decide if the photographer gets his perfect shot or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reinhard uses Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III cameras and Canon lenses in Seacam underwater housings, and underwater strobes. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think the camera system is important,\u201d he says. \u201cThe photographer produces the images in his brain. The cameras are simply his tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=759-2225\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-222\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/759-2225.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Reinhard Dirscherl<\/p>\n<p>Looking to the future, Reinhard is all too aware that pollution, climate change, overfishing and inadequate protection threaten the world\u2019s oceans.
