Winning a local photography competition aged 12 set him firmly on his path, and after studying for photography diplomas in the UK, he started working on cruise ships in the Caribbean and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI managed to get a few hours off, where I could go ashore and get some pictures,\u201d he says. \u201cI started to put those into libraries and that\u2019s what got me started in travel photography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=846-1167\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-281\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-1167.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-1167.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-1167-365x245.jpg 365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Stuart Black<\/p>\n<p>Now living in London with his wife, Stuart shoots travel imagery in diverse destinations. But his favourite subjects are often closer to home, such as the South West of Ireland, including County Kerry and Cork. \u201cYou can\u2019t beat Ireland for landscapes,\u201d he says. \u201cThe light and weather just change so fast there. You can be sitting in cloud and rain and then suddenly it lifts and you get amazing light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His choice of destination is also guided by the seasons. \u201cIn spring I think about where\u2019s good for spring flowers. Spain is great for almond blossom,\u201d he says. \u201cIn winter I either go long haul or go to cities in Europe, especially those with Christmas markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=846-141\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-278\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-141.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Stuart Black<\/p>\n<p>Stuart generally travels with minimal camera kit \u2013 one camera, three lenses and a carbon fibre tripod \u2013 in order to be able to walk long distances and find the best subjects. His advice for getting great images is to take your time, and don\u2019t settle for the first angle you see: \u201cTake your compass, get the best light and wait for a nice sky,\u201d he advises. \u201cTry to find something a bit different. I never go in with a fixed image of what I\u2019m shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Stuart\u2019s image gallery you may notice some wonderful square format shots, with a different feel to the majority of travel stock images. This is because, as well as digital, he sometimes shoots with a Hasselblad medium format film camera. \u201cI like the slow pace of shooting on film,\u201d he says. \u201cUnlike digital, with film you have to spend time setting the camera manually to make sure it\u2019s perfect at the taking stage. It also costs money every time you press the shutter release, so you can\u2019t afford to make many mistakes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=846-880\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-280\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-880.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-880.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/846-880-366x245.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Stuart Black<\/p>\n<p>Stunning images such as these are regularly chosen for magazine covers and double page spreads, as well as being popular with card companies. Even so, Stuart admits it is not an easy industry to work in.
