Las Fallas, Valencia,\u00a0March\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sculptors in Valencia work for many months to create the\u00a0fallas \u2013\u00a0<\/em>elaborate wooden, paper-mach\u00e8\u00a0and plaster figures propped on architectural monuments\u00a0several stories high, that\u00a0are often\u00a0caricatures\u00a0of public figures and celebrities. Semana Santa, throughout Spain, April<\/strong><\/p>\n

During Semana Santa, as Easter is known in Spain, Catholic brotherhoods take to the streets to perform\u00a0solemn processions, often dressed in striking – not to mention scary-looking – robes with\u00a0hoods, originating from\u00a0medieval penitents\u2019 costumes. These processions dominate the streets of almost every Spanish town during the last week of Lent, but they are at their most visually extravagant in Andalusia and Malaga.<\/p>\n

Held two weeks after Semana Santa,\u00a0the Feria de Abril (Seville Fair)\u00a0fills this beautiful Andalucian town with\u00a0music, dancing – Seville is one of Spain’s flamenco capitals\u00a0– and spectacular horse parades. The fair\u00a0is an opportunity for locals to dress in their best costumes and to be seen out on the wonderfully decorated streets. During the day horse parades centre around the bullring, while\u00a0evenings see people partying in marquees,\u00a0drinking sherry and eating\u00a0plentiful\u00a0tapas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Battles between Moors and Christians are reenacted each year\u00a0in Valencia to celebrate the Reconquista<\/em>, the struggle\u00a0that took place from the 8th to the 15th century, ending in Christian victory after 700 years of Moorish rule. Troupes take to the street dressed up in medieval inspired costumes against a backdrop of fireworks,\u00a0music and gunshots. The festival’s climax is a final battle, won by the Christians, that is fought around a castle. Attracting over a million people each year, the San Fermin festival’s most renowned event is the encierro<\/em>, or running of the bulls, in which a bull is let loose in the streets\u00a0every morning for a week. Hundreds of people run in front of the bulls\u00a0down a narrow\u00a0street in a section of the old town of Pamplona, ending in the Pamplona bullring. While this may be only for the brave, there are many other events\u00a0to enjoy, such as\u00a0parades, local sports and fireworks displays.<\/p>\n
