Had the explosives ignited, the building would have been reduced to rubble.<\/p>\n<p>This aquatint shows the festivities during a Guy Fawkes Night at Windsor Castle, published in September 1776:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/003ktop00000007u040u0004svc2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"003KTOP00000007U040U0004[SVC2]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/003ktop00000007u040u0004svc2.jpg\" width=\"682\" height=\"443\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBritish Library\/Public Domain<\/p>\n<p>Until recently it was common for children to build effigies representing Fawkes which they wheeled through the streets on wheelbarrows, asking for a &#8216;penny for the Guy&#8217;, before burning them ceremonially on the bonfires.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/procession_of_a_guy.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Procession_of_a_guy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/procession_of_a_guy.jpg\" width=\"679\" height=\"581\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWikimedia Commons\/Public Domain<\/p>\n<p>Now the face of Guy Fawkes has again come to symbolise political revolt, used by the Occupy Movement, Anonymous and other anti-establishment groups. They adopted the image from the comic book and film, V for Vendetta, in which the guise is used by a vigilante trying to destroy an authoritarian government in a dystopian Britain.
