They fell in love with Africa\u2019s dramatic, desolate landscapes and unique animal life. \u201cAnd the rest,\u201d they tell me, \u201c..is history.\u201d The husband and wife team have been photographing the continent together ever since, creating beautiful and insightful images of the continent\u2019s natural abundance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=743-217\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-67\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/743-217.jpg?w=470\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Ann and Steve Toon<\/p>\n<p>Taking a break from their latest field trip in South Africa, they explain what motivated them to start shooting. \u201cWe wanted to share our experiences of Africa\u2019s amazing wildlife and scenery,\u201d says Ann. \u201cWe were both journalists, but words alone didn&#8217;t seem adequate to communicate what we saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=743-734\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-69\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/743-734.jpg?w=470\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Ann and Steve Toon<\/p>\n<p>Now travelling regularly to Africa from their home in Northumberland \u2013 itself a beautiful area and regular subject of their photography \u2013 they capture a diverse range of wildlife. Elephants, black rhino and leopards are among their favourite subjects, as well as \u2018less obvious ones, such as hyenas\u2019. \u201cBut it&#8217;s photographing interesting behaviour, whatever the subject, that we enjoy most,\u201d says Steve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=743-563\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-68\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/743-563.jpg?w=470\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Ann and Steve Toon<\/p>\n<p>Their favourite place to shoot is the Kalahari, a dramatic, arid South African wilderness. \u201cThe diversity of wildlife is astounding for such an apparently inhospitable habitat,\u201d Steve says. \u201cIt&#8217;s possible to get a real sense of how the entire ecosystem works, from the smallest bug to the top predators, the magnificent black-maned lions. And the light is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=743-718\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" id=\"i-69\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/743-718.jpg?w=470\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Ann and Steve Toon<\/p>\n<p>What are the benefits of working together? I ask. \u201cWildlife photography can be a lonely profession at times,\u201d reply the pair. \u201cIt&#8217;s great to be able to share wonderful experiences, and to provide mutual support when things aren&#8217;t going as planned.\u201d And the downsides? \u201cBeing together 24\/7 in hot, sweaty, dusty conditions, living off tinned food and beer in a small tent in the middle of nowhere does result in the odd domestic row or three!\u201d But it\u2019s all worth it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=743\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/TheToons<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Ann-Steve-Toon-Wildlife-Photography\/125155607541714\" target=\"_blank\">The Toons on Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A chat with the Toons Over a decade ago, Ann and Steve Toon took a sabbatical from their London journalism jobs to see the world.
