It changed his outlook so profoundly that he never returned to his old life. Six years later, having joined Robert Harding\u2019s talented pool of photographers, he is still travelling. He describes how it was this flair for taking photos that earned him a passport to a nomadic existence. \u201cI had the idea to try and use all the photos that I took on my trip, so I sent them to a couple of agencies,\u201d he says. \u201cThen photography became a way of supporting the travel, and I just kept on travelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=756-631\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-764\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-631.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Jochen Schlenker\u00ad<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although he has bases in Australia and Germany, Jochen is at home \u2018on the road\u2019. \u201cI\u2019m on the move most of the time,\u201d he says. \u201cMore and more I work on the images while I\u2019m travelling. I don\u2019t have to return to an office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of speaking Jochen is photographing the Blue Mountains near Sydney \u2013 a popular hiking spot. He has photographed diverse subjects \u2013 from beaches through to Buddhist temples, portraits and cityscapes \u2013 but his favourite subjects are mountainous landscapes. \u201cI love the Alps, the Himalayas and the Rocky Mountains,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s not so comfortable walking up with all your gear,\u201d he adds. \u201cBut equipment is getting lighter and cameras are getting smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=756-1461\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-767\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-1461.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Jochen Schlenker\u00ad<\/p>\n<p>Jochen also loves the challenge of shooting animals, and asked about his most memorable shoot, he recalls a time when his two favourite subjects came together in dramatic style. \u201cI was shooting ibexes, a kind of mountain goat, in the French Alps,\u201d he says. \u201cThey are usually quite shy, but I managed to get close to them.\u201d One day, having photographed the animals during the afternoon he set up his tripod to capture the reflections of mountains and clouds in a mirror-like lake. \u201cThen a lone ibex walked by in the distance, completing the image,\u201d he recalls. \u201cThat was my all-time favourite shooting experience.\u201d The image won him a 2010 Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=756-775\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-765\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-775.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-775.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-775-366x245.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Jochen Schlenker\u00ad<\/p>\n<p>Jochen\u2019s more challenging experiences have often involved getting to the sites he wants to shoot. \u201cI remember travelling in Jordon, bordering Israel, and somehow I just got on the wrong road in my rental car and was driving close to the border,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI got stopped and searched three or four times by the military. I didn\u2019t know what they were going to do \u2013 that type of thing can get a bit scary at times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=756-806\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-766\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/756-806.jpg\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9 Jochen Schlenker\u00ad<\/p>\n<p>Asked what advice he would give to novice photographers, he replies: \u201cThe most important thing is to be out there all the time and take as many photos as you can \u2013 just learn by doing. I read something written online by another photographer and there was a lot of truth in it.
