Now it\u2019s harder to get started as a photographer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=834-1604\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-94\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/834-1604.jpg?w=470\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" \/><!--more--><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Steve Vidler<\/p>\n<p>Chatting in his spacious London flat overlooking Tower Bridge, secondary to his main base in Hong Kong, Steve explains how he built his fortune from humble beginnings. \u201cI grew up in Dover and ran away from school before the exams,\u201d he says. Aged only 16, the single-minded youngster travelled alone to Australia, and a few years later he arrived in Japan where he bought a camera and started shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love travelling and photography complements it. It certainly beats working for a living,\u201d he laughs. But despite his playful turn of phrase, Steve\u2019s career has been shaped by a high degree of commitment, as well as a fiercely independent attitude. \u201cI\u2019ve always worked for myself,\u201d he says. \u201cI do my own publishing as well. One book I made, called \u2018Portrait of London\u2019, is a best seller here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=834-1065\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-93\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/834-1065.jpg?w=470\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Steve Vidler<\/p>\n<p>Steve\u2019s favourite subjects include festivals, and he arranges trips to coincide with key events like London\u2019s Notting Hill Carnival and Chiang Mai Flower Festival in Thailand. However, his all-time favourite shoot was in the Peruvian jungle in 1984 where he hired a plane for ten minutes at the (then substantial) cost of $100 to take photos of a meandering Amazon tributary. He knew he had captured something of value. \u201cThe pictures that make money are the ones that are difficult to get,\u201d he explains. \u201cThis was one of those. That shoot probably brought in total gross sales of half a million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=834-6614\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-96\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/834-6614.jpg?w=470\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Steve Vidler<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving come from a working class family my favourite moments are where you get a picture that you know is going to sell,\u201d he adds. \u201cEvery day\u2019s a treasure hunt so it gives you a great buzz when you get the image and the perfect conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travel photography has thrown up a few frightening moments too, like the time 20 years ago when Steve got stuck out on the sands while photographing Mont Saint-Michel on the French coast. \u201cThe tide started coming in quickly and I thought \u2018I\u2019d better start walking\u2019. Suddenly it was up to my shoulders and I had to throw all my camera gear away and swim to shore,\u201d he says. \u201cI was lucky to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/results.php?Search=834-6204\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-95\" class=\"size-full wp-image\" title=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertharding.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/834-6204.jpg?w=470\" alt=\"This image is copyright protected - to use this image purchase a license at robertharding.com\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00a9\u00a0Steve Vidler<\/p>\n<p>Looking back on his career, Steve is thankful for having survived the hairy moments, and for being able to capitalise on so many opportunities. But ultimately this owes to his great dedication. Even in the rare times when he\u2019s at home, he is constantly on the lookout for that winning shot. \u201cThis morning I was out at three shooting Tower Bridge.\u201d he says. \u201cBy then the morning glow has started so it\u2019s the best time to shoot without masses of traffic.
