While they used to be the sole preserve of the rich (in the days when hunting the animals, not viewing them, was the main aim), safaris have now become more accessible, with accommodation ranging from luxury lodges to simple tents and eco-friendly camps. Most travellers still go in pursuit of the big five – elephant, lion, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhino - but amazing landscapes, smaller mammals and birdlife can be unexpected highlights.
