857-60869 - Serbian villagers in the hills outside Valjevo hand pick red raspberries (Rubus idaeus). Serbia grows the Willamette and Meeker varieties, from Oregon and Washington States, USA, and Ampla from Netherlands. Serbia's raspberry exports comprise a third of the world total (30%), and are considered by connaisseurs to be among the finest. Additionally, Meeker red raspberries contain Ellagic acid, which has anti-carcinogenic properties: "Ellagic acid acts as a scavenger to "bind" cancer-causing chemicals, making them inactive. It inhibits the ability of other chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. In addition, ellagic acid from red raspberries prevents binding of carcinogens to DNA, and reduces the incidence of cancer in cultured human cells exposed to carcinogens."
