Da Gama was a Portuguese sailor/explorer and led expeditions from the Cape to the East in 1497. A padrao is a limestone pillar bearing the Portuguese coat of arms and an inscription stating when and by whom it was raised. The cross signified Portuguese sovereignty and Christianity.
