This week, Indians decorate their homes and public spaces with lamps and flowers for Diwali, the festival of light (also known as Deepavali). Some towns hold colourful fairs (melas) and people – including followers of Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism – often celebrate for up to five days.
