During Thailand’s Phi Ta Khon, also known as Ghost Festival, residents of the town of Dan Sai take part in a lively procession wearing colourful masks made of coconut leaves and rice husks, and hats made from rice steamers. The ritual is said to originate from a story in which the Buddha re-appeared from a journey after being presumed dead, provoking raucous celebrations.
